The Kansas 4-H Ventures are headed to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness June 20-30, 2009 for 6 days and 5 nights of canoeing, portaging, outdoor cooking, fishing and embracing the beauty of the northern woodlands. The BWCAW is located in northern Minnesota on the Canadian Border.

The Kansas 4-H Ventures program is designed for teens and adults who are interested in and have a passion for outdoor adventure experiences. Since its inception in 1997, the program is known for its emphasis on leadership development, youth and adult partnerships and low impact camping techniques in wilderness settings. What: The 11 day trip includes 6 days and 5 nights of canoeing, portaging, outdoor cooking, fishing and embracing the beauty of the northern woodlands of northern Minnesota. Unique dimensions to the trip include exploring Gooseberry Falls State Park, the Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior and visiting the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN.

Who: Teens and adults who want to experience canoeing in a wilderness setting .. Plus ... seek a challenge that requires mental and physical skills in leadership, teamwork, outdoor cookery, safety and coping with nature’s elements! A maximum of 27 youth and adults will be able to participate in the trip, to be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.

Youth: Must be 14 years of age before January 1, 2009 or have completed the 8th grade by June, 2009. Must complete a sports medical physical.

Adult: Must be Registered VIP through local extension office, willing to work in partnership with teens, love the outdoors. Must complete a sports medical physical.

  • April 1 $150 Deposit, Kansas 4-H Participation Form, Registration Form, Assumption of Risk and BWCAW Acknowledgment and Consent Form due in State 4-H Office
     
  • May 15 $400 final fee payment and other required forms due
     
  • May 29-31 Shakedown Training at Rock Springs 4-H Center (required)
     
  • June 1 BSA Class 3 Medical Physical Form due
     
  • June 20-30 Canoeing Trip
  • Registration:

    Please register for the program utilizing the on-line registration process.
    Go to www.Kansas4-H.org , click on "Register for Events" in upper left corner and follow instructions. You will receive via snail mail additional information, including an invoice and forms which will require parental signatures and must be returned to the State 4-H Office.

    Fee: $550 ($150 deposit due April 1). The 11-day trip fee includes transportation, program fees, campground fees, permits, insurance, 21 meals, quick-dry shirt, equipment and supplies. Participants will be responsible for purchasing 3 meals on the road trip. Crew equipment will be provided; participants will be responsible for personal gear and clothing (see Gear Info on the Venturers’ website for more details).

    Tentative Schedule:

  • June 20 Depart Manhattan, stay at motel near Owatonna, MN
     
  • June 21 Travel to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, camp at Gooseberry Falls State Park.
     
  • June 22 Tour the International Wolf Center in Ely, load packs and stay overnight at outfitters on Moose Lake.
     
  • June 23-28 Paddle your way across endless miles of lakes, portaging, fishing, swimming, foraging for wild blueberries!
     
  • June 28 Return to outfitters, shop in Ely, camp at Clayton Co. Fairgrounds
     
  • June 29 Travel to Lamoni, IA, swim party, pork chop dinner, camp at City Park
     
  • June 30 Return to Kansas
  • What are the medical requirements?

    Because this is a physically and mentally demanding experience, it is very important that participants be in good physical condition. Specific requirements include:

    • Physical medical examination (due June 1)
    • Tetanus shot or booster (within 5 years)
    • Top physical condition (those who have marked obesity for height and/or are physically inactive will not be accepted)
    • No medical conditions that are aggravated by strenuous activity include asthma, high blood pressure, heart conditions, poorly controlled diabetes.

    Alaska Gold Rush in 2010

    We’ll be traveling to Alaska in 2010. One of the requirements for the trip is previous 4-H Venturing experience. If you’ve never been on one of the Venturing trips, now is the time to go!
