  2009 4-H Venturers Backpackers --- Personal Equipment Checklist

Personal Gear

  • Sleeping Bag
  • Foam sleeping pad/mattress
  • Stuff bag for sleeping bag

Clothing (should be quick drying, not 100% cotton)

  • Long Sleeve shirt - 1 (your crew shirt is long sleeved, hydro-duct polyester jersey knit)
  • Short sleeve shirt - 2 (one to sleep in, one to wear)
  • Shorts - 1-2 pairs
  • Long pants - 1 pair
  • Warm Jacket (fleece is good)
  • Rain jacket and pants (avoid cheaply made and cheaply priced), no ponchos
  • Gloves (wool works best)
  • Stocking Cap
  • Hat with wide brim
  • Underwear - 2 pair
  • Lightweight insulated underwear
  • Bandanas (3)
  • Water shoes or sandals
  • Athletic shoes to wear at camp
  • Socks (biting flies love your ankles and toes)
  • Swimming Suit

Toiletries

  • Toothbrush
  • Small, itty-bitty tube of tooth paste
  • Small hand towel (chamois cloth works great)
  • Personal feminine products
  • sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Insect repellent

Medical

  • Medications (prescription and/over the counter)
  • First-aid kit (personal size)
  • Spare pair of vision glasses (or contacts)
  • Sunglasses (Polarized for fishing)
  • Contact solution

Miscellaneous

  • Waterproof matches in waterproof container
  • Tent stakes (10) - no plastic stakes
  • Pocket knife
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Camera and film in waterproof bag
  • Compass
  • Bowl, spoon and drinking cup
  • Nalgene Water 1 quart bottles (2)
  • Playing cards, books
  • Crazy Creek style of chair
  • Assorted sizes of Zip-top plastic bags (2 gallon, 1 gallon, 1 quart)
  • Heavy duty garbage bags (3)
  • Water proof bags to keep small personal items handy in the anoe
  • Fishing pole, lures, etc.

Note:  You'll leave all your techie gadgets in the front country as they are not allowed in the backcountry!!!
