- Members must be 10, but not yet 19, before January 1 of the
current year. *ALL contestants on a team must meet national
contest age requirements
for the team to be eligible to advance to national contests*
(each contestant must have passed his or her 14th birthday and
cannot have passed his or her 19th birthday on January 1 of the
current year).
- Eligibility:
a. Each County Extension Council may enter one team of
four regularly enrolled 4-H members. Each District Extension
Council may enter teams of four regularly enrolled 4-H members
equal to the number of counties comprising the extension
district.
b. Contestants who have competed at the National 4-H
Livestock Judging Contest (even as an alternate) in Louisville,
Kentucky, are not eligible to compete in this contest.
c. In keeping with National 4-H rules, contestants who
have participated in post-secondary course work or training for
post secondary competition in the subject area of this contest
are not eligible to compete.
- Eight classes will be judged. They will include beef cattle,
swine, and sheep. Oral reasons will be taken on four classes.
- Scoring will be on the basis of 50 points per class on
placing 50 points for each set of reasons.
- **New in 2008** Students will receive a scantron form
to record placings after all classes have been judged.
Students must have a number 2 pencil to record their placings.
Please remind students to log all placings in their notes so
that they may transpose them onto the scantron at the conclusion
of the classes. Individual class cards will not be taken.
-
Teams with traveling trophies are responsible for their
return on the day of the contest.
Special Awards and Out-of-state Participation
Awards will be announced as soon as possible after
last set of oral reasons.
Traveling trophy will be awarded to the first place team as
follows:
Beef - Kansas Club Calf Association, Tony Small, 1200
West Radio Lane, Arkansas City, KS 67005
Sheep - Purebred Committee, Kansas Sheep Association,
Alex McClure, 4702 NW 60th, Newton, KS, 67114
Swine - Kansas Pork Producers Council, 2601 Farm Bureau
Road, Manhattan, KS 66502 Reasons and Overall - Kansas Livestock
Association, Todd Johnson, 6031 SW 37th Street, Topeka, KS,
66614
Trophy will be retired to the county after that county has won
the award three times. If a trophy becomes filled with
recognition plates before it is won three times by one county,
the sponsor may purchase a new trophy or recycle the trophy. All
team members competing in out-of-state contests must be 14
before January 1 of the current year and meet other eligibility
requirements listed in special rules. First, second and third
place teams (if qualified) will have the option of choosing in
which contest they prefer to compete. Choices of location will
be determined by teams in order of their placing. Example: First
place could choose Kansas City if they wished not to participate
in Louisville, the second place team would be given the
opportunity to participate in Louisville or Denver. The third
place team would be given the option to accept or reject the
remaining contest. Participation in Louisville, Denver or Kansas
City contest will be extended only as far as the 5th place team.
Thus Kansas could possibly send teams to only Denver and Kansas
City if all five of the top teams defer from participating in
Louisville. Cash awards are tied to the contest attended, not
the team ranking in the Kansas 4-H Livestock Judging
Contest. The team attending Louisville, if qualified, will
receive $1000.00 sponsored by Kansas Livestock Association. The
team attending the National Western in Denver, if qualified,
will receive $400.00 sponsored by the Livestock and Meat
Industry Council. The team attending the
American Royal in Kansas City, if qualified, will receive
$300.00 sponsored by the Joe Lewis Memorial Fund, c/o Kansas 4-H
Foundation, Manhattan, KS 66502. Cash awards must be used toward
travel expenses to the respective contest immediately following
the state contest of that year or they will be forfeited.
Contestants may compete at a specific 4-H contest (Louisville,
Denver of Kansas City) one time only. Teams will be reimbursed
after results of the contest and summary of expenses have been
reported to the State 4-H Office. Fourth and fifth place
qualifying teams may attend an approved out-of-state contest of
their choice at their own expense. The 4-H Livestock Judging
Contest at the National Western in Denver and the American Royal
in Kansas City prohibit participation by previous contestants of
the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest in Louisville.
